Captain Flem

Boy, talk about stirring the cosmic soup. I usually don’t post things about work, but a couple weeks ago I was shooting a magazine story with a writer. The subject was a retired 96-year-old tugboat worker named Bob. He had gotten into the trade after World War II. The interview and the photo session were in his apartment. I don’t know about other photographers, but when I’m shooting, I sort of zone out, and don’t really hear the interview. But […]

Curtain Call for Mrs. Emelson

The curtain has come down on Mrs. Emelson. I shot this photo of her for my high school yearbook, that’s where we met. High school for me was just a continuation of a rudderless existence beginning in grade school, and running through junior high. The current was pushing me toward the arts, fueled by years of mediocre grades in math, science, etc. I was sleepwalking through my junior year – my parents and I had reached an uneasy détente. They […]

Fed-Ex Office Memories

Any professional photographer of a certain age, working in Baltimore at a certain time, will recognize this scene – our most sacred ground. During the era “B.D.” (Before Digital), all photographers kept a mental map in their heads…on it were the locations of all of Baltimore’s Federal Express boxes and their respective collection times. This was a period of great upheaval in the Baltimore photography scene. Out-of-town clients wanted their film (processed or unprocessed), negatives, contact sheets, prints, whatever, OVERNIGHT. […]

Corks Follow Up

I collected 380 over the years. The oldest cork was from June of 1999. It sealed a bottle of Rioja that I bought on my honeymoon, and carried back from Spain. We drank it on our first anniversary. There […]

Holidaze

I am in what is commonly referred to as a “Mixed Marriage.” I’m Jewish, and my wife is crazy. This year, with the holidays approaching, I went to the closet and removed two menorahs – the “Burger Family Menorah,” and the “Union Street Menorah.” The Burger family menorah is an ancient, brass number. It appears in the background of old family photographs long before I was born. The Union Street menorah, my mother picked up when I was a kid. […]

Corks

I started saving corks in the last century (I love saying that). Not every bottle I drank, but if it was some sort of occasion, I’d stick a cork in my pocket, and later write on it where it came from. I kept them in one of the little drawers in my roll-top desk. When it filled up, I started another little drawer. Then they all got moved to a big drawer. Eventually I was using cigar boxes. Finally I […]
